The historic town of Wells’ distinctive landmark is the granary with its overhanging gantry on the quay. The town has a maze of narrow streets with shops and cafes, pubs and places to eat, all built around the picturesque harbour which has a long maritime history, both as a port and as home to its own fishing fleet. More recently it’s modern role is a marina for pleasure craft.
The stunning dog friendly beach with rows of traditional beach huts is a mile from the main town and can be reached by walking along the scenic beach bank or by car. From summer 2022 there will also be an electric shuttle bus from the football club car park to a set-down point near the roundabout at the beach end of Beach Road. Whilst most of the beach and pinewoods are dog friendly, there are some areas of the beach which are designated dog free and you should always ensure that you walk your dogs on the dog friendly part of the beach.
The beach is backed by dense pine woods, which are also extremely dog friendly, and is managed by Natural England in partnership with Holkham Estate.
The main shopping area can be found on Staithe Street, but prior to the 1960’s, commercial premises were also found along the High Street which leads south towards St Nicholas’ Church. The church was rebuilt after a lightning strike raised it to the ground in 1879. John Fryer (Royal Navy officer) who was Lieutenant William Bligh’s sailing master on HMS Bounty was born in Wells, and is buried in the churchyard.
The town is very dog friendly with the majority of the pubs and inns welcoming both you and your dogs, the cafés are also dog friendly with some of them providing treats for your dog while you enjoy your break.
In the centre of the town is a large green, ringed by lime trees, which is known as The Buttlands. Down the hill at its south-west corner you can see Ware Hall House, which was rebuilt over a period of years from the 1970s by Miss May Savidge, who transported it to Wells on pallets after it was demolished from its original location in Ware, Hertfordshire.
